Can the analogue past inform the digital present

چکیده
The prospect of composing music by means of technology can be intimidating for students unaccustomed to the challenges of the contemporary digital studio. Computers are, perhaps inevitably, associated with scientific laboratories — an image which is hardly conducive to lengthy, creative study. Rows of apparently inert black or grey boxes rarely offer a pleasurable sensation comparable to the immediate feedback and tactile physicality of playing an instrument, which is, naturally, the experience with which most student musicians are familiar. Musicians invariably want to communicate with others even at the preliminary stages of composing and performing. Indeed, even a familiar routine such as practising ensures a musician’s private space will radiate outwards to include others within a broader, more communal area. Such sociability is inhibited if a student is obliged to wear headphones and sit, locked in a private world, staring at a computer monitor, their gestures reduced to merely clicking with a mouse. In an attempt to adapt to this new environment musicians will inevitably refer to reassuring, traditional notions such as ‘the instrument’, ‘expression’ and ‘performance’. But the new context of the studio demands a constant re-evaluation of even these most basic musical concepts. I would argue, of course, that this is precisely the valuable and challenging contribution the electroacoustic medium can offer to music education: it poses questions relevant to all musicians (even if occasionally it appears to defer providing any answers!). Fundamental æsthetic and sociological issues intrude immediately, demanding the attention of all who work with technology. If this account of the studio environment seems excessively gloomy, I will readily assert that in my experience electroacoustic musicians are rarely more dysfunctional than their traditional colleagues. Even a cursory examination reveals the popularity of electroacoustic music in British higher education, indicating that many intelligent students

متن کاملTransition from analogue-to-digital nuclear electronics for precise gamma radiation spectroscopy: advantages and limitations
In this paper, digital signal processing for precise gamma ray spectroscopy is presented. The basis of this system is a 14bit waveform digitizer which samples the output of pre-amplifier signals directly. The advantages and limitations of the digital spectrometer compared with analog spectrometer has been tested and analyzed from precise gamma ray spectroscopy point of view. The results shows t...
متن کاملDual Spacization Approach to the Electronic Publishing
Dual spacization of publishing means emergence of digital publishing in online and offline virtual environments along with analogue publishing. Analogue publishing is a kind of publishing that is produced in the form of physical printed writings as they appear in a single paper, single or many pages newspapers and magazines and books, writings on leaves and pieces of trees, natural skin and lea...

The usage of digital radiology systems with insufficient quality control of digital image detectors can efface inherent superiorities of digital systems in comparison with analogue radiology systems and even makes an increased level of patients’ radiation doses. Modulation transfer function (MTF) is one of the most important parameters related to image quality and digital detectors efficiency. ...
متن کاملAnalogue Methods in Palaeoecology: Using the analogue Package
Palaeoecology is an important branch of ecology that uses the subfossil remains of organisms preserved in lake, ocean and bog sediments to inform on changes in ecosystems and the environment through time. The analogue package contains functions to perform modern analogue technique (MAT) transfer functions, which can be used to predict past changes in the environment, such as climate or lake-wat...
متن کاملImprovement of position measurement for 6R robot using magnetic encoder AS5045
Recording the variation of joint angles as a feedback to the control unit is frequent in articulated arms. In this paper, magnetic sensor AS5045, which is a contactless encoder, is employed to measure joint angles of 6R robot and the performance of that is examined. The sensor has a low volume, two digital outputs and provides a high resolution measurement for users; furthermore its zero positi...
